Robbie Stillman is being remembered for her work promoting some of Summit County’s best-known charities.But Miss Stillman, who died Tuesday at age 80, also played a role in the creation of the talk-show genre.After graduating from Old Trail School, Briarcliff College and the University of Akron, Miss Stillman traveled to New York, where she worked with Tex and Jinx McCrary at the height of the couple’s television and radio careers.She worked in Akron in television, where she hosted her own show, Social Whirl, on the former WAKR-TV. In the 1960s, Miss Stillman returned to New York to work with Merv Griffin, interviewing prospective players the first four years of Jeopardy.She is perhaps best known and remembered for her behind-the-scenes work at various Summit County charities and businesses.Miss Stillman worked at the county’s Red Cross Chapter and at National City Bank.She spent 23 years at Akron General Medical Center, where she served as director of public relations and then volunteer services.She also volunteered for decades with the Akron General Women’s Board, a philanthropic group that holds fundraisers and operates the hospital’s gift shop and snack bar to support patient services.“She set a very high bar of standards for not only herself but everyone around her,” said Christine Hinman, Akron General’s director of system development. Hinman succeeded Miss Stillman as director of volunteer services in 1998.“Many people told me, ‘You have big shoes to fill,’ and I knew that,” she said. “It was a very high standard that she set. I always looked upon her as a role model.”Hinman said Miss Stillman had “a heart of gold” and would frequently stay at the hospital until 8 or 9 at night to comfort someone who had a sick family member.“She was such a compassionate and caring person,” Hinman said.Other organizations that benefited from Miss Stillman’s expertise included the national commission that established the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Akron Press Club.A private service will be held at Rose Hill Burial Park.
