Decorated Army chaplain dies
John H. Galloway was one of the first soldiers sent to Korea when war broke out 61 years ago.He was the first soldier at Walter Reed Army Hospital to receive a Purple Heart award for wounds sustained during the war, his family said.A memorial service for Mr. Galloway, 80, of Springfield Township, who died Dec. 8 and who served as a chaplain for five organizations, including the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 35 and the Korean War Veterans No. 148, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m.. Friday at the Trinity Church of the Nazarene at 2780 Canton Road in Springfield Township.Burial service for Mr. Galloway will take place at Rose Hill Burial park at 2:30 p.m. Monday.A native of Tennessee, Mr. Galloway joined the Army at 17 and was stationed in Japan when war broke out in Korea.He was wounded in action, shot in the arm and leg, and spent 14 weeks in the hospital.After the war, he worked as a skilled brick mason in the Akron area, his daughter-in-law, Mary Galloway, said.“He spent a lot of time at hospitals with patients,” she said, and he attended countless funerals for veterans. “When they passed, he would be there for families.“He was very giving,” she said.After Mr. Galloway died, the family found three notebooks filled with the names of veterans whose funerals he had attended, Mary Galloway said.She said her father-in-law was a recovering alcoholic and part of a 12-step program for 22 years.“He was proud he was recovering,” she said.Being a chaplain, she said, was his way to “do for others.”Mr. Galloway was preceded in death by his wife, Elouise.
